1. flat out

휴식을 취하지 못할 정도로 엄청 바쁘거나 할 일이 많을 때 "very busy"라는 의미로 사용한다. 호주에서는 "flat chat"이라고 표현하기도 한다.

• I'll be flat out next week because there's a new shipment arriving.
• I've been flat out all week, I am exhausted!

2. train of thought

여기서 사용된 train은 연속적인 사건/행동/생각을 의미하여 주로 무언가의 방해로 생각의 흐름이 끊겼을 때 사용한다.

• Oh! I've lost my train of thought! What was I talking about?
• My mum called and completely distrupted my train of thought.
• A: Can I ask you a question? B: Just give me a minute, I don't want to disrupt my train of thought.

3. on track

트랙을 벗어나지 않고 따르고 있다는 것은 일이 기대하거나 생각한 대로 진행됨을 의미한다.

• You want to get back on track.
• We missed the deadline last week, but we have just submitted the report now, so we are getting back on track.
• Are you on track to complete the report by the end of the week?

4. off track

트랙을 벗어났다는 것은 일이 기대하거나 생각한 대로 진행되지 않음을 의미한다. 말 그대로 길에서 벗어났음을 표현하기 위해서는 "off the track"을 사용하여야 한다.

• We are getting off track here, guys. We've only got 10 more minutes left and we need to confirm the marketing budget.
• Sorry, I'm getting off track!
• It's diffcult to stay on track with so many distruptions, perhaps we should move to the conference room.
• I don't want to get off track, but we can all agree that the new marketing manager is difficult to get along with.
• We should have completed the work by now, but the team got off track with some technical issues.

5. (to) bank on

어떤 일이 반드시 일어날 것임을 기대하거나 확신할 때 사용한다. 보통 부정적인 문장에서는 확신하거나 기대하지 않는 것이 좋다라는 뉘앙스로 다른 이에게 충고할 때 사용한다.

• I'm banking on Sarah to get a promotion, so that I can apply for her position.
• Since it's a public holiday on Monday, we're banking on an early finish tonight.
• I wouldn't bank on it.

6. (to) brush up on

자신이 가진 스킬이나 지식 따위를 높이고 발전시킨다는 의미로 사용한다. 격식체, 비격식체 상관없이 사용할 수 있다.

• I'm brushing up on my Italian, because I've got a business trip in July.
• I got the job at the publishing company! But I really need to brush up on my editing skills, I'm out of practice!

7. (to) bring something to the table

무언가 이롭고 유용한 것을 제공한다는 의미로 주로 누군가가 팀이나 회사에 제공하는 기술, 경험을 묘사할 때 사용한다.

• The great thing about Sam is that she brings years of management experience to the table.
• He brings exellent communication skills and award-winning design experience to the table.
• What have you brought to the table? (직역하자면 어떤 제안이나 아이디어를 미팅에 가져 왔니?)

8. (to) bring up

미팅, 전화, 일상 대화 속에서 어떤 토픽을 언급하거나 소개하기 위해 사용한다.

• I'll bring it up with Stefanie when I see her next week.
• Our presentation is missing some of the key points. So I'm going to bring it up with the team tomorrow, we can spend some more time on it.

9. (to) turn down

거절의 표현으로 사용한다.

• They offered me tickets to the conference, but I had to turn them down because it's my son's birthday.
• He turned it down because they offered him the promotion, but told him that they couldn't increase his salary.
• I applied for the position but then I found out I had to spend 6 months of the year living in New Zealand. So I had to turn them down.

10. wing it

의도치 않게 계획 또는 준비없이 무언가를 해야할 때 사용한다.

• My presentation is on my laptop, which I left at home. I'll just have to wing it.
• If you haven't received the notes, you'll just have to wing it.

11. off-the-cuff

계획 또는 준비없이 무언가를 하는 것을 의미한다. "off-the-cuff"는 계획 또는 준비없이 무언가를 해야하는 상황이 별 것이 아니라는 뉘앙스를 갖고 있다.

• I wish that I was confident enough to make presentations off-the-cuff, I spend so much time planning for our monthly board meetings.
• Paul won an award last night and made a fantastic speech, totally off-the-cuff!
